What is a README?

In software distribution and software development, a README file contains information about the other files in a directory or archive of computer software. A form of documentation, it is usually a simple plain text file called READMERead MeREAD.MEREADME.txt or README.md (to indicate the use of Markdown)

But what is a Manager README?

It’s a practice that’s emerged with managers. The goal is to publish a document that explains what’s important to them and what it’s like to work with them.

This manifest helps prospective or current employees understand what to expect from their manager or coworker. In general it is called a “manager README”.

READMEs are intented to help others understand what it might be like to work with someone, it is also useful to the writer because it’s a way to have some proper introspection.

This practice shows an effort at building trust by being intentionnaly vulnerable and by sharing personal and professional core values.

Ressources

I always try and list a few ressources that might help you or your team. Here is what I could find. There are ressources for both manager and direct reports (individual contributor or not)

You’ll find examples of Manager README underneath. This tool can be seen as a double-edge sword, so just in case, I’m also putting articles “against” this practice.

Examples

A HUB for README inspirations

#1 with Shani Raba

#2 with Mike Hostetler

Articles

An article about the good and the bad behing a README

49 manager README from big companies

Magnus Hedemark’s README

That’s it for the content,
