Keep in mind that this template is just a mere guideline, the goal of it is to give you a framework and the tools/resources to say as much as possible on you.
The informations must seem relevant to you and genuine to your team or coworkers.
You can delete any questions (and its block) if you don’t want it.
Know your limits and don’t overshare if you’re not confortable doing so.
In software distribution and software development, a README file contains information about the other files in a directory or archive of computer software. A form of documentation, it is usually a simple plain text file called
README
,Read Me
,READ.ME
,README.txt
orREADME.md
(to indicate the use of Markdown)
It’s a practice that’s emerged with managers. The goal is to publish a document that explains what’s important to them and what it’s like to work with them.
This manifest helps prospective or current employees understand what to expect from their manager or coworker. In general it is called a “manager README”.
READMEs are intented to help others understand what it might be like to work with someone, it is also useful to the writer because it’s a way to have some proper introspection.
This practice shows an effort at building trust by being intentionnaly vulnerable and by sharing personal and professional core values.
I always try and list a few ressources that might help you or your team. Here is what I could find. There are ressources for both manager and direct reports (individual contributor or not)
You’ll find examples of Manager README underneath. This tool can be seen as a double-edge sword, so just in case, I’m also putting articles “against” this practice.
